OVERVIEW
The Grade II* listed property in Central Birmingham had formerly been the National & Provincial Bank. The property had lain empty for nearly ten years and the resulting disregard for the building had taken its toll. The new owner visualized the potential to refurbish this building in a prime location to offer attractive office space with both a contemporary and period feel. The main lobby area was subject to reinstatement of a marble and granite floor, cleaning, repairs and alterations to masonry work and the later addition doorway was blocked. Plasterwork to the ceilings was renovated. Extensive works were carried out to the slate panel roof, (which was subject to ‘particular architectural interest’), with the original slate panels being stripped and prepared to receive a weatherproof coating, a process that was approved and monitored by the listed planning officer. All windows were subject to listed planning approval for restoration rather than replacement. Exterior masonry work was cleaned and fire damage doors repaired. The finished refurbishment ensured that period features were restored.
